The Rollin and Mary Ella King Native Artist Fellowship supports artists by providing an opportunity for growth in their artistic medium. Its mission is to advance contemporary native arts by assisting artists in realizing creative goals in the visual, verbal, or performing arts. Established in 2001 at the Indian Arts Research Center, the fellowship offers artists financial support to cultivate new knowledge and skills as well as to improve on existing abilities. Using the School's native arts collection, the fellowship is also designed to further artists' education in their own community's arts. The King Fellowship promotes commitment by engaging artists in a project in which the spirit of discovery and personal growth are realized thus providing a greater motivation for self-direction, freedom of expression, and leadership in the arts.

Philosophy of the Program

By providing financial assistance, the Rollin and Mary Ella King Native American Artist Fellowship gives artists time, a place to work and live, and access to SAR's world-class collection of Native American Southwestern arts. A vehicle for self-expression without prejudice, the fellowship empowers artists to go beyond current limits in their art. Additionally, this fellowship increases the quality of Native American arts, increases public awareness of individual artists, provides a significant economic benefit for the recipient, and creates a dialogue between the artist and SAR staff that enhances our understanding of the aesthetic and creative process.

The Rollin and Mary Ella King Native Artist Fellowship enables the Indian Arts Research Center to continue the quality of its leadership position by supporting artists who have the desire to lead and to express and share their talents with the world.
