Editorial Assistant

The School for Advanced Research seeks a 20 hour per week Editorial Assistant. This person will work with the co-directors of SAR Press to act as “traffic controller” to manage information relating to projects in publication. This position is part-time, non-exempt, and does not have paid benefits. The position is paid hourly, and will range between $12 and $14 per hour, depending on experience.

Characteristic Duties:

  • Print, photocopy, and collate manuscripts and other materials;
  • Check pdf page proofs to see if requested corrections have been made;
  • Check submitted manuscripts to ensure that all parts are present (chapters, figures, permissions, etc.);
  • Respond to routine permissions requests;
  • Submit CIP and copyright registration applications with appropriate materials;
  • Conduct routine correspondence with authors and reviewers (deadline reminders, requests for additional materials, transmitting materials for review or proofing) via email and postal mail;
  • Filing and file research;
  • Prepare author and production promo invoices after publication of a book;
  • Database entry of book reviews;
  • Database entry of product marketing information;
  • Conduct internet research on professional journals and trade publications;
  • Stuff envelopes and mail promotional materials;
  • Occasional assistance with the packing / shipping of book orders

Desired Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a publishing environment. Excellent written and verbal skills, attention to detail, organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines, the ability to communicate clearly with authors, co-workers, and publishing liaisons, and a demonstrated commitment to being a part of a small team.

Required Qualifications: Associate’s degree or equivalent experience in a publishing environment. Experience with Word, Excel, database software using a PC.
