The Catherine McElvain Library opened in 1991. It provides individual workspace, a current journals browsing area,
a computer, a scanner, a copier, a fax machine, and a conference room for
small group meetings or study.
The purpose of the Library is to serve the research needs of the staff and scholars
through an active program of materials acquisition and library services.
The Library has a strong basic anthropology collection with a concentration in
reference materials, archaeology, ethnology, physical anthropology, and linguistics. The
collection presently comprises approximately 8,600 books and manuscripts in the
following areas:
General Anthropology
Archaeology
Method and Theory
Southwestern United States
Eastern and Southeastern United States
Mexico and Mesoamerica
Europe and Great Britain
Ethnology and History
Southwestern United States
Plains area
Eastern United States
Mexico and Mesoamerica
Europe, Asia, and Oceania
Linguistics
Physical Anthropology
Southwest and New Mexico History
Biology and Geology (limited holdings)
There are 50 current journal subscriptions.
A small, good archive resides in the Library. Among the papers it houses are those of Kenneth Chapman, Rick
Dillingham, and Amelia Elizabeth and Martha White, who had a significant
influence on twentieth-century Santa Fe and the development of a market
for Indian arts. The archive
will be open to resident scholars, staff, Members, and researchers in
March 2003.
Because
the Library has only limited seating and other resources, we ask Members,
visiting scholars, and researchers who wish to use the collections to
contact the librarian in advance and identify the purpose of their visit. Materials are to be used in the building and may not be checked
out.
