The annual research theme for 1998 is Southwestern Indian easel painting. The Research Associate on the painting theme this year is Kathy Chase, who is the former curator of art at the Museum of Northern Arizona.

We are fortunate to be able to support two artists this year, through the generosity of Ron and Susan Dubin. The decision to select two painters is because of the broad range of subject matter that is being produced by artists from various Native cultures today in the Southwest. The two artists who were selected are Diane Reyna and Gary Yazzie.

Both artists will be in residence this year in the Ron and Susan Dubin Native American Artist Studio. Diane will use the studio first, starting on June 15 and working until August 23. Gary will begin his use of the studio shortly thereafter, and work until early November when the School's Indian Arts Research Center will host a week-long Southwest Indian Painting Convocation. Both Diane and Gary will serve as facilitators on this project.
