Research for this doctoral dissertation includes visits to art galleries, art shows, and Indian Market; interviews with Hopi carvers; and an analysis of the kachina collections at SAR's Indian Arts Research Center.

In this dissertation, indigenous slavery, in which thousands of American Indian captives were incorporated into Spanish/Mexican households, is examined as a contest of stories and memories.
