To allow ample time for preparation and circulation of participants’ papers,
the School schedules seminars twelve to twenty-four months in advance.
The deadline for advanced seminar proposals is April 1 of each year.
Proposals are reviewed by a team of outside reviewers, and decisions are announced within approximately three months of the deadline.
How to Apply
Any scholar wishing to organize an advanced seminar should send five copies of a proposal no more than six pages long, typed double-spaced, to the School at the address given below. We encourage seminar organizers to include scholars representing a mix of perspectives, disciplines, or sub- disciplines and to consider the ethnic and gender balance of the group. Although participants should not be officially invited until after a proposal has been formally accepted, organizers should indicate the interest of each scholar in attending the proposed seminar.
The proposal should explain:
- The topic of the seminar and key questions to be addressed
- How the topic is of broad importance to anthropology
- Why a seminar is necessary in order to address the topic
- Why a seminar is needed now
- Who the participants in the seminar might be, why each has been included, what each would contribute, and the likelihood that each would participate
- The expected results of the seminar
Each copy of the application must include
- Cover Sheet (downloadable) on top
- Proposal, not to exceed six double-spaced pages, addressing the criteria listed above
- Short bibliography, not to exceed one page, of references cited in the proposal
- Curriculum vitae, not to exceed four pages, for the applicant/s
- Plan for disseminating the results to a broader audience for a seminar addressing a critical contemporary issue
Proposals are accepted throughout the year. Those received after the
April 1 deadline will be considered during the next review cycle.
